The Best Cure For a House Fire - Don't Let One Start!

The Best Cure For a House Fire - Don

The best cure for a house fire is never let one start. After all, house fires claim thousands of lives a year and take down more than 20,000 houses.Even houses with smoke damage require much cleaning and many replacement items. To prevent fire, make sure your stove and oven are clean.Never leave flammable objects such as paper wrappers or plastic goods on top of heat sources such as toasters and oven eyes.Don't leave food unattended on the stove.Make sure your oven, stove, microwave and toaster are well ventilated so they will not begin a slow burn of a wall or cabinet.Next, have a professional electrician check your system for code violations. Many times electrical wiring is substandard and needs improvement or replacement.Double check the electric receptacles for heavy users such as washers and dryers.Always clean the lint filter on your dryer and every month use a vacuum to clean out any lint that is stuck inside. When using candles, make sure that flammable materials are far away.Likewise, do not smoke in bed or any other soft surface.Always use an ashtray and if possible, smoke outside.Better safe than sorry.Make sure your home has enough fire alarms to reach all bedrooms.Buy a fire extinguisher for the kitchen and keep it handy in case of a grease fire.Test fire alarms regularly and change batteries twice a year. Many people change their batteries each time the time changes. This guarantees that they will work when you need them.Space heaters must be placed carefully. At least five feet from anything flammable. This is difficult in some rooms but it is worth it.Don't leave space heaters unattended. If possible turn them off at bedtime.Or, plug them into a timer to keep them staying on too long. They tend to over heat and burn out their cords. They can also set drapes and papers on fire, if you aren't careful. Finally, figure out an escape plan in case of fire.If your prevention efforts fail, you need an escape plan. This plan can save lives, especially if you practice it with family members, especially children.Decide on a safe place to meet when your family escapes from the burning house. If necessary purchase ladders for use from upper floors. If you can afford it, you may consider a sprinkler system similar to those used in public buildings.

For years I've had no choice but to rest my extension ladder against the gutters in order to clean them out. This certainly hasn't been very kind to the gutters themselves; but more importantly, I've always feared that the ladder could slip and I would fall to the ground with it. And that hasn't been a very comforting thought.

Last November I hired someone to clean the leaves from the gutters that had accumulated in them when they fell from the trees. I watched him and saw that he had some sort of ladder stabilizer that provided him with real stability. Until then I didn't know such things existed. This spring -- after a horrible windstorm that blew all the maple trees' 'polly noses' into the gutters and clogged them horrendously (particularly after they started to sprout), I went to my local Home Depot where I bought a Werner stabilizer. I attached it to my ladder and gave it a test run. I immediately found out that it was useless for my purposes because the arms... Read more

I was terrified working up any ladder over 3 feet in height. Adding this stbilizer really gives the ladder a solid feel and now I feel confident climbing to the top of my 28 foot ladder. I havn't used the stabilizer on a roof yet, just against brick and aluminum siding. Once in position, it does not move at all. It takes seconds to install or take off. The only negative is the relatively narrow span of the product. It just about spans across my smallest windows. I will have to find a different product for my larger windows. The weight can also make it more difficult to maneuver the ladder since it becomes top heavy. Definately a 2 man job. No regrets however, It's allowed me to do things I did not think I was capable of.

I am a professional home inspector and would not dream of using my ladder to access roofs without this stabilizer. Before finding this, I used to have my ladder against the roof edge, which can damage the eve shingles or against the gutters with can make the ladder slide to the side. One day after I had my ladder slide and fall, leaving me stranded on a roof top, I knew I had to find a solution. I use this every day and it definitely adds to my confidence. It is well made but one thing the factory should do is that the edges of the steps were very sharp and could cut your hands. The factory should buff the edges before shipping. I took some emery cloth and smoothed them myself. I also wish they would come up with a model that could fold up flat for easier transportation and save space in my truck. I think this is a great product and for the money it is worth not getting injured or worse.

Tips From a Professional Gutter Cleaner

Tips From a Professional Gutter Cleaner

Cleaning gutters professionally is a great way to earn extra cash without a lot of start up investment. It is also a great add-on service for an existing company i.E.Window cleaning company, landscaping company, or property maintenance company. What you need to do to set yourself apart as a real professional and not just a neighborhood kid, is to understand the finer points of gutter cleaning.1) You need to ensure that you are not denting the customer's gutters with your ladder. The simplest way to do this is to line your ladder up with the gutter hanger. These supports are evenly spaced down the length of the gutter to give it support. If you place the ladder to far down from one of these supports, you ladder will bend the gutter.A better way, however, is to make sure the ladder doesn't even touch the gutter.By using ladder stand-offs, the ladder will rest on the roof instead of the gutters.I recommend using a stand-off called the Ladder Max.It is the only standoff designed to be put on the roof.2) You need to make sure you don't leave gutter debris all over the customer's property. Some companies will use leaf blowers to blow out the gutters. This will work if the contents of the gutter are dry. However, once you have blown all the dried leaves out, you need to make sure to rake everything up and cart it out - either to another location or to a compost pile with the homeowner's permission.I prefer to scoop out the gunk by hand (wearing rubber gloves, of course) and putting it into a bucket.I would not recommend spraying out the gutter with a pressure washer because it will make too big a mess - gunk stuck to the side of a customers house will not lead to future business.3) Checking to ensure the gutter's downspouts are functioning is key.The downspouts are the tubes running down the side of the house carrying the rainwater down and away from the roof. The true professional flushes these out with a garden house to make sure water can flow through.Another thing to consider is the wire mesh guard at the top of the downspout. These guards strain the water ensuring that the downspout does not get clogged by debris. If it is missing one, make sure to replace it.I always carry extra downspout filters in my van for this reason.4) Offer gutter whitening as an additional service.Conventionally, the term gutter cleaning refers to clearing out the inside of the gutter. But the outside of the gutter also requires cleaning - only for aesthetic reasons, though. The outside often gets coated with greenish algae and/or stripes of black algae known as "tiger striping." The easiest way to clean these is with an extension pole and a soft bristled brush.I mix up a bucket of water and simple green and dip the brush head into the bucket, then I reach up and scrub the exterior gutters with the brush. Finally, I rinse the gutters off with a hose. Some gutter cleaners use a specialty product for this such as "gutter zap" or "gutter grenade." I have used bleach in the past, but problems may occur when you are cleaning gutters over a wooden deck - the bleach can drip and discolor the wood below.Gutters are often cleaned twice a year in many parts of the country.A minimal yearly cleaning is recommended if the gutters aren't subjected to a heavy debris load.I hope this article has helped you get started in the gutter cleaning biz.
